  1. I think it was during the premier of Song of South
that Walt Disney himself may have attended a receiption at the Wren’s Nest? Walt Disney presented to the Joel Chandler Harris Memorial Assoc a gift Diorama of “Uncle Remus sitting by the fire in a slave cabin telling tales of Brer Rabbit to the salve owners children? This diorama was on display for decades before being removed.

I have often wondered what happen to the display outside wall of the former Joel Chandler Harris Memorial Library now name the West End Library ?

My 2nd thought is why would Atlanta agree to changing the name of Joel Chandler Harris Library
a writer for the Atlanta Journal & Constitution
and famous author of children literature?

Is there any record of JCH Jr.’s opinion of the film?

Great question, Cheryl. I don’t know but I’ll be on the lookout.

Claudia, you’re exactly right — Walt Disney did visit the Wren’s Nest on more than one occasion, but definitely for the Song of the South reception. The figures from the “diorama” are on display, but scare the heck out of me every time I go to pick up the mail.

I don’t know anything about the display outside the library, but I do know that Atlantans jump at the chance to change a name. I’m just glad our West End MARTA station is staying just put, instead of the Ralph David Abernathy/West End Station.
