Featured Exhibit
The life and work of storyteller, puppeteer, and puppet maker Akbar Imhotep
This special exhibit was put together by Ra Malika Imhotep around the “Black History Hand Puppets” constructed by her father and legendary Wren’s Nest storyteller Akbar Imhotep between 1994-1996. Its title comes from Imhotep’s poetic description of the transition between life to the afterlife : “crossing the crystal river.” As depicted in the quilt reproduced here, made by Imhotep in the year prior to his own crossing, the Crystal River meanders in the space between the bright youth of a sunflower and the anchoring presence of a great tree.
The installation features informative banners and panels which display the collection of Imhotep’s 12 black history hand puppets as well as other important objects and images. Entrance to this special exhibition is included in the purchase of a regular tour ticket through the end of February.
